Plain Weave (Tabby) Weaves Wider Than Twills Do

Plain Weave and Twills

If you want to weave twills and plain weave in the same piece, the plain weave areas will be wider than the twill sections. This can be used on purpose for the bowing in-and-out effect, but if woven for a long time, the selvedge threads may begin to break due to abrasion from the reed.

Weave basket weave instead of plain weave when you want both--a plain weave look and also twills. Because basket weave is "over two, under two" it will draw in the same amount as most twills. These are illustrated in Book #3, Weaving & Drafting Your Own Cloth in the Drafts chapter.
